What is a Cadetship?
A cadetship offers the opportunity to gain practical work experience whilst undertaking a Commerce, Economics or Business degree majoring in accounting. Not only do cadets get to "earn while they learn"; they also apply their learning to real situations throughout their degree. This means that they’ve got a distinct advantage over many of their fellow students when it comes time to graduate.
Cadets choose to work while going to uni for many reasons. The most common of which is that they recognise that gaining hands on experience at the same time as studying provides the opportunity to reinforce what is learnt at uni. They also realise that at the end of their degree they will have six years experience resulting in a greater earning capacity opposed to someone who completed university prior to finding a job.
Who is eligible?
We offer Cadetships to individuals who wish to pursue a career in public accounting and who have recently completed Year 12 or have recently commenced University. Cadetships are subject to gaining entry to a university and undertaking the appropriate course, as well as meeting the basic selection criteria required for cadets.
How are Cadetships structured?
The cadetship program can be structured as a combination of full-time/part–time work and study. By undertaking two subjects per semester the degree is completed in six years. Some cadets choose to accelerate their degree by completing three subjects per semester or undertaking additional subjects at summer school or via correspondence.
We provide leave support to undertake studies by way of unpaid time off to attend lectures, tutorials and examinations. Cadets work full-time during any university holidays.
On successful completion of the Cadetship, and subject to satisfactory work performance and academic results, a permanent position may be offered to the cadet.
What support does a Cadet get?
Whilst doing the degree cadets have access to study leave, reimbursement of textbooks up to a maximum value of $500 per year, the support of a mentor in the workplace, and internal training.
How are Cadets paid?
We employ our cadets as permanent part-time members of staff. Accordingly they are paid for hours worked and accrue the normal entitlements. The commencing salary for a Cadet is based on the amount of University completed. For a person who has just finished Year 12, the starting salary is in accordance with the appropriate clerical award. Continuation of the Cadetship, which is subject to an annual review of academic results and work performance, will see the Cadet’s salary advance commensurately.
Ongoing employment
Our goal is to offer permanent employment to cadets at the completion of their program, but this is not always possible. The possibility of ongoing employment is assessed on a case-by-case basis and takes into account individual performance and business needs. Completion of the Cadet Program is not a guarantee that you will be offered permanent employment.
